Now that you have gone through the installation and setup of your WooCommerce store you can add your first product.
Add Your Product
- Go to your WordPress Dashboard
- On the left panel click Products
- Choose Add Product
Under the Product name you will see a big text field. This field is dedicated to a description of your product. Feel free to be as descriptive as necessary.
Below you will have a chance to write a "Short Description" as well. Whether or not this short description is visible depends on your theme.
When you click the Publish button on the right your product will go live.
|Product Categories||Like posts and pages, you can assign Categories to your products. You can use these for your own internal organization or you can publish them as menu items to help your customers find what they're looking for. For example, if you sell Shirts you can make a "Shirts" category by itself or even add subcategories like "T-shirts", "Long-sleeve shirts," etc. In this example, "Shirts" would be the Parent Product Category.|
|Tags||Tags add further description to your products by adding an extra level of categorization. Following the "Shirts" example, you can tag shirts with extra descriptive keywords like "formal", "colorful", "political," etc.|
|Describe your product well||Your customers are curious. This is your chance to give them some important information about your product. If you think your customers will be curious about the materials your product is made from then provide some details. If you think this product is limited in some way then you ought to mention that because you will have a chance to "Up-Sell" your customer later.|
Overview of "Product Data"
Below the main product description field you will see Product Data.
Utilizing the Product Data section effectively can create long-term value for your store. Here is where you will have a chance to input detailed information about your product, manage inventory, configure shipping options, link to other products, and more.
|General||Here you can add an SKU (stock-keeping unit) to your product. This unit will help you keep track of the availability of your product with a unique code. You can also add a Regular Price and Sale Price (which you can schedule for a certain time)|
|Inventory||Getting to know your Inventory section is critical if you are selling physical goods with a limited quantity. You can manage inventory at the "product level" in your Add Product menu, putting in the quantity of a product as you add it. You can also choose to allow backorders or update the status of your product from In Stock or Out of stock. We'll discuss other inventory management options in subsequent guides.|
|Shipping||In the shipping pane you can configure the weight and physical dimensions of your product and assign a shipping class. We will discuss shipping classes in more detail later in this tutorial.|
|Linked Products||Linking products allows you to up-sell, cross-sell, and group certain products. The Up-sell feature allows you to recommend a more expensive or higher quality product to your customer based on the product they're currently looking at. The Cross-sell allows you to recommend a product within the shopping cart — a good place for impulse items. You can also add the current product to product group (more on those later).|
|Attributes||Product attributes are like categories, but they apply more specific technical information about the product. Using the shirt example above, think color: is the shirt black, polka-dotted, or printed? In this case, the shirt would be a Variable product.|
|Advanced||The Purchase Note allows you to send a note to your customer after they purchase this product. Menu order lets you set a number for the position of this product if and when it appears in a menu. A value of "1" would mean that the product will display first. If you believe your customers will give your product favorable — or at least honest — reviews then you can check the Enable reviews option.|
